Earlier today the U.S. House Appropriations Committee voted to prevent the reopening of horse slaughter plants in the United States. The “defund” amendment drafted by Congressman Sam Farr and Congressman Charlie Dent passed by a narrow margin of 25-23.
While this is a step forward for anti-horse slaughter activists, the defund amendment does not prevent the export of horses to Mexico for slaughter. The Safeguard America’s Food Exports (SAFE) Act would need to pass in order to stop this high dollar trade.
The following are the votes for the defund amendment. For those interested in seeing the SAFE Act passed to further protect America’s horses, please contact your representatives.
